Climate Dynamics Ph.D. forms

Guide to Forms for Climate Dynamics Graduate Students

As a graduate student progresses through the program, they need to have the following forms completed:

  1. PROPOSED COURSEWORK

    [form 1]
    • When: Before student's first semester of classes.
    • Why: Give an indication of what classes student will take.
    • How: Include courses (and grades) from previous degrees (including those from other institutions) which student wishes to count towards the CLIM PhD. Note this is a PROPOSED curriculum; the student may deviate from the proposed course work at any time as long as classes are consistent with the requirements of the program.
  2. DOCTORAL DISSERTATION COMMITTEE

    • When: Typically 3-6 months before taking Specialty Examination
    • Why: Document formation of dissertation committee
    • How: Chair and Director are usually the same person. One member must be from within the Climate Dynamics Department and one member must be from outside. Committee must have at least 4 members.
  3. PROGRAM OF STUDY

    [form 3]
    • When: When all coursework has been decided.
    • Why: Document that requirements have been met for graduation.
    • How: Only include classes needed to obtain CLIM PhD, including any classes from outside the program which are meant to count towards the PhD.
  4. CANDIDACY EXAMINATION

    [form 4]
    • When: When Specialty Examination topics are determined by the dissertation committee.
    • Why: Insure that student, committee, and department administration are in agreement on appropriate topics for Specialty Exam.
    • How: List topics that will be covered by Specialty Exam.
  5. RESULTS OF CANDIDACY EXAM

    [form 5]
    • When: Upon completion of Specialty Exam.
    • Why: Convey results of the Specialty Exam.
    • How: Committee Chair records results based on the concensus of the Dissertation Committee.
  6. DISSERTATION PROPOSAL

    [form 6]
    • When: Upon completion of Proposal Defense.
    • Why: Record dissertation proposal.
    • How: See form.
  7. ADVANCEMENT TO CANDIDACY

    [form 7]
    • When: Upon completion of Proposal Defense.
    • Why: Documents that Dissertation Committee believes that the student is ready to work on dissertation.
    • How: See form.
  8. DEFENSE OF DOCTORAL THESIS

    [form 8]
    • When: Upon defense of dissertation
    • Why: Documents that student has defended dissertation.
    • How: Note that the student must present a pre-defense of the dissertation for the student's Dissertation Committee at least one month prior to the dissertation defense.
